We opened up the geode (?) squash, expecting to roast it with some beets.  If the combination seems odd, you haven't seen how many beets we have.  The inside turned out to be soft and tasted mostly like cucumber, so we ate them chopped up raw.  I recommend them.  I also recommend eating things when you don't know what they are.

it does look like a cucumber. Did you get any of those stripey beets?

I like roasting beets because they turn out tremendously sweet. When you roast stripy beets for a long time, the colors run and they look like raw salmon, which makes eating them really strange.

Beets

We are getting beets with almost every CSA pickup. And the week this summer that beets were NOT in our box, they were in the smaller box and people were leaving them on the exchange table, so we got beets then as well. Since we are backlogged with beets, I don't know what the most recent ones are (can't tell until we cut them open). Does this make it sound as if I don't like beets? Actually, I like them a lot.

Also, the mystery squash may also have been called an "eight-ball". It was really yummy raw.

I love beet greens, but I have a pretty low limit for actually eating the beets, and G doesn't really like them at all. We haven't actually gotten too many beets this year, unlike other years, but sadly, I think that's because we haven't gotten much of anything :(

I had chiogga beets a couple yeara ago:

That's a great chioggia picture. I really like beet greens too.

I've been sorry to read about the East Coast farming troubles this year. I'm sad for the tomatoes. Just a function of the CSA model and smallish-scale farming, I guess. It could happen just as easily here (although too much rain in June is probably not the way that the failure would happen...)
